Why is this medication prescribed?
Penlac (ciclopirox) topical solution is used along with regular nail trimming to treat fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails (an infection that may cause nail discoloration, splitting and pain). Ciclopirox is in a class of medications called antifungals. It works by stopping the growth of nail fungus.
How should this medicine be used?

What special precautions should I follow?
Use Penlac only on nails and immediately adjacent skin. Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth.
What should I do if I forget a dose?
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
What side effects can this medication cause?
The most common adverse reactions are rash-related. Inform your health care professional if the area of application shows signs of increased irritation (redness, itching, burning, blistering, swelling, oozing)
What storage conditions are needed for this medicine?
Store Penlac at room temperature between 59° and 86° F (15° and 30° C). Keep out of the reach of children.
In case of emergency/overdose
An overdose of Penlac is unlikely to occur. If you do suspect that a much larger than normal dose has been used or that Penlac has been ingested, contact an emergency room or a poison control center.
What other information should I know?
Do not use nail polish or other nail cosmetic products on the treated nails. Avoid use near heat or open flame, because product is flammable.
